Vietnam is a country in mainland Southeast Asia. Diverse cultural traditions, geographies, and historical events have created distinct regions within the country. The lowlands have been occupied by ethnic Vietnamese, while the highlands have been home to numerous smaller ethnic groups that differ culturally and linguistically from the Vietnamese.

Vietnam experienced prolonged warfare in the mid-20th century and a disassembling, first militarily and later politically, into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, better known as North Vietnam, and the Republic of Vietnam, usually called South Vietnam. Following their reunification in April 1975, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was established in July 1976. Since then, Vietnam has become one of the world's most populated countries, with a rapidly expanding market economy. Hanoi, the capital city, is located in northern Vietnam.

Since 1954 Hanoi has been transformed from a primarily commercial city into an industrial and agricultural center. Additionally, the Ha Noi region has one of the most complex ethnolinguistic patterns in Asia. With such ethnic and religious diversity has come significant opposition to Jesus followers, who are often harassed in their workplaces or banned from their villages. As the country continues to flourish, the Church must stand for its many peoples to find true prosperity and unity in the Lord God.
